How to detect intrusive sunflower with the help of drones – advantages and examples

What are the results?

In this case study we took as an example the contamination of soybean crop with sunflower invasion and it were presented the areas affected by using 2 specific methods:

In the following images we’re presenting a RGB type general map of a soybean plot which is the subject of sampling analysis in detecting intrusive sunflower blooming.

For a easier detection, there were generated personalized maps with different color palettes to highlight the sunflower weeds.

In addition to their visual detection, a list of points can be generated for each intrusive plant i.e. (weed), or the general areas affected by them, with the help of which the exact coordinates for their location can be extracted.

Multispectral maps

In the following images we can see a general multispectral map analysis of a soybean plot, which is allowing a finer data adjustment resulting in a better isolation of the intrusive plants (weeds) from the basic crop field.

As the ones presented earlier, for an easier detection there were generated custom maps with different color bands or multispectral bands.

In this case as well, compared to the RGB spectrum detection, a list of points can be generated for each intrusive plant i.e. (weed), or for the general areas affected by them with the help of which the exact coordinates for their location can be extracted.

Conclusions

Drones solution is ideal by terms of view in speed, action and power to evaluate the spread of invasive plants (weeds) in soybean, rapeseed and wheat crops, while being able to offer the exact location of the affected areas in a very short period of time and with centimeter precision.

Therefore, the essential things to keep in mind, in terms of results, are the following:

  • General map – Where you can visually see the affected areas by the intrusive sunflower blooms (weeds)
  • Custom map – In which the intrusive sunflower blooms (weeds) are highlighted by different color palettes
  • Post-processing – Point extraction (with GPS coordinates) or areas where intrusive sunflower blooms (weeds) are present
